Aka Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.

In a statement on Thursday, (November 13, 2008) President-elect Barack Obama says he will resign his seat as Illinois Senator on Sunday. Instead, he will focus on his transition to the White House. "It has been one of the highest honors and privileges of my life to have served the people of Illinois in the United States Senate," Obama said in a statement.

All eyes in Washington are now fixed on Illinois to see who will be appointed as Obama's replacement. Governor Rod Blagojevich is in charge of selecting the new senator, who will serve the two remaining years in the senator's term. Rumored frontrunners for the position include representatives Jesse Jackson Jr. and Jan Schakowsky, as well as Illinois Veterans Affairs Chief Tammy Duckworth.

Obama will be sworn in as the 44th president of the United States on January 20, 2009.
